In my picture I picked 6 things that I think or know are on Cole totem pole. All the things on my picture have some meaning in this book or to Cole.

• Bear, the bear represents the spirit bear witch plays a large role in the story as a symbol of peace and looking at the big picture. 
• worm, the worms represent the moment Cole wanted to live and was willing to fight himself to stay alive. 
• whale,the whale represents a time Cole spent with Edwin and Garvey learning how to live alone and rely on himself.
• sparrow, the sparrow represents the first time Cole felt something for another living thing.
• mouse, the mouse represents Cole strength and will to do anything once he sets his mind to it
• circle, the circle represents being connected to the big picture with nature and land.

Jordyn- Connector

The only way I can connect to this section, is explaining something that happened to me when I was a kid. Sure, it may sound rather stupid, but it's the only thing I have to share.

So the picture above happens to be a gift my parents bought me. Well.. at the time, I wanted this freaky doll. I nagged and nagged for it because online, it actually looked pretty cute. However, when it came the night of Christmas and I was sent to bed, I grew terrified of this 'thing' next to me in bed. I honestly remember wrapping it up in a blanket and setting it to the foot of the bed because it scared me too much.

The part of the section that reminded me of this, was when Cole and Peter went to soak alone. The two fighting somehow brought up the monkey doll gift. I think it's because I was so afraid of it, that I wanted to destroy it.

Summarizer Section 4 Melissa

In the last section of the book Cole decided to bring Peter to the Island to help him with his pain. Peter didn't like the idea of coming to the island because he was still scared and angry at Cole and he didn't know that Cole has changed so Cole tried to prove to him that he has and he tried to help him with his pain by soaking in the pond and rolling the ancestor rock down the hill to get rid of anger. I've noticed that in the section that Peter kind of was acting like Cole when Cole first came to the Island, like thinking the dances around the fire were stupid and it made him look even stupider. Also by thinking rolling the ancestor rock down the hill was dumb too. After a few days of Peter not trusting Cole, Peter wanted to go down to the pond alone with Cole and this caused Peter to get mad and beat Cole up. Peter started to pity himself and thought that he wasn't good enough for this world anymore. Peter was so caught up in his own emotions that he hugged Cole. The Spirit Bear showed up once that happened and then the bear vanished into the forest I think that The Spirit Bear comes when someone is doing the right thing. Peter finally believed that Cole has saw the Spirit Bear before. Then after that they went back to the base camp and Cole decided to crave a circle at the end of his totem pole because life is a circle and its an beginning and it also comes to an end.

Summarize- Jordyn

Cole was escorted back to the detention center by a guard, with Garvey by his side. Cole's father never visited Cole in the hospital, and he was charged with child abuse. Cole was sent back to the sentencing so the others could decide his fate. Though, Cole believed he would be put in jail, he was okay with that. Soon, he had gotten a surprise from Edwin and Garvey. They had told him they now had custody over him once convincing the Circle. Garvey and Edwin helped Cole back to the island. As told before, Cole had to use his own money and objects for the islands supplies. Cole had the chance to escape the island, however he decided it be best not to. It was a good idea too, because Edwin had been holding the spark plug in his jacket.
Edwin and Garvey stuck with Cole for a few days, until he started and finished his shelter. They gave him tips and forced him to do certain things such as cook him breakfast, supper. At night, they would dance. They danced the whale dance, the wolf dance, and on Garvey and Edwin's last night, Cole danced the Spirit bear dance. Every morning, Edwin would go with Cole to relax in the cold water. Edwin told Cole this would help him forget his anger. Cole wasn't allowed to leave the water until then. After Cole swam, Edwin told him to carry a rock up a hill. Cole was told that this represents him carrying his ancestors. When he was done pushing the rock up the hill, he was told to roll it back down. This rolled away his anger.
Cole had to continue doing this even after Edwin and Garvey left.

When he went back to the island he had to take more responsibility and do things independently and building his shelter made him have more of a responsibility.









In the section Cole had to grab a rock and walk up a hill to roll the rock back down and Edwin called it an ancestor rock. This helped Cole with releasing his anger.
