Why did Cole suddenly decide that the sparrows didn't deserve to die?
Cole believed the birds were so small, innocent, so breakable. He thought they deserved chance. When I read about Cole thinking this, I couldn't forget it.
Why did Cole throw the white fur into the water?
Earlier in the story, I remember Cole had said that the fur gave him a sense of power, but now he no longer wanted to hold that. The Spirit Bear was a memory that would never be forgotten.
Why didn't Cole argue with Garvey about seeing the Spirit Bear?
Cole knew what happened and didn't need to prove it to anyone. He knew he wasn't lying. He wanted to tell the truth from now on.
Why did Cole decide that he wanted to live?
'The meaning of life was choice and control, while Death was uncontrollable, and nothing.'
What did Cole go through in order to live?
Cole catches slimy worms and drinks fresh water from the wet rain. He crushes a living mouse in his hand and eats it, eats grass, and re-digests fish that he had hurled up earlier (which is rather disgusting.) He smears wet mud onto his face, neck, broken arm, and his torn up chest to sooth his skin and keep the bugs away.
